Gillian Troughton, our candidate for Copeland, today welcomed Tom Watson, Labour’s Deputy Leader to Copeland. Gillian launched her pledge today to support Sellafield and the nuclear industry. No ifs. No buts. They met workers from Sellafield and the nuclear supply chain at Atkins Global.
The pair visited Atkins at Westlakes Science and Technology Park and saw how they are using the latest technology as part of the nuclear clean up at Sellafield. They then met with workers from Atkins and Sellafield to talk about the importance of the nuclear industry for local jobs and how investment in industry is essential to make a success of future ventures.
Gillian Troughton, Labour’s candidate for Copeland, said:
“The nuclear industry is at the centre of our community and I support nuclear. No ifs. No buts.
“My husband works in the nuclear industry, and I know how vital nuclear is for the local economy and for the livelihoods of thousands of people. It’s about good jobs for today and good jobs for tomorrow.
“Sellafield provides thousands of jobs and Moorside is a big opportunity for more skilled jobs, investment and growth. The Tories are letting Copeland down by not investing in the infrastructure we need to make the nuclear success it can be; we need more money for our roads and rail.
“If I get elected, I will shout for more investment to make the future of nuclear in Copeland a success.”
Tom Watson, Labour’s Deputy Leader, said:
“Gillian is clear, I’m clear, the Labour leader and Labour Party policy is clear – we need new nuclear to keep the lights on in this uncertain world.
“We need Moorside to keep skilled jobs here in Copeland and I know Gillian will do everything she can to make sure it gets built
“I've spent thirty years supporting and campaigning for the nuclear industry, particularly in Cumbria, and I'm not going to stop now. The Labour Party will never, ever stop supporting the civil nuclear industry.”
