Two hours to hospital by bus is dangerous

To highlight the Tories dangerous plans to move vital NHS services from Copeland to Carlisle, Andy McDonald MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, and Gillian Troughton, Copeland’s parliamentary candidate, hopped on a bus (or three) to see how long it will take people to get to Carlisle via public transport from Copeland.

Three buses, 93 bus stops and 137 mins later, Andy McDonald arrived at his destination.

Andy McDonald MP, talking about his 2hr 17min trip, said:

“It shows just how out of touch the Tories are from working people’s daily lives that they think a two hour journey by bus is acceptable for someone in need of hospital treatment.

“It takes the same time to travel from central Manchester to Carlisle as it does getting public transport from Copeland to Carlisle. The Tories are shameless if they force through these changes – only a Labour MP will fight for the local NHS in Copeland to stay local.”

Gillian Troughton, said:

”I know that from a lot of places in Copeland the buses have been cut back or scrapped altogether so moving hospital services just isn’t practical for local people. Whether you have to travel for your own treatment or to visit someone, you should have a local hospital that is easy to access.

“It’s a disgrace that people who rely on public transport will have to travel over two hours to get hospital treatment in Carlisle. It will create a two tier health service in Copeland for those who have access to a car and those who don’t. I’m not going to let that happen”
