It is an honour to be the Labour candidate for this crucial by-election where I live. West Cumbria is my home and it’s where I raised my family. It has given me, my husband and two wonderful children so many opportunities.

I want to be your MP because I want to make sure that we get the best deal for Cumbria. We need to secure jobs for the future at Moorside and we need to protect our NHS for future generations.

My husband works in the nuclear sector, so I know how important the industry is to thousands of Cumbrians. I’m pro-nuclear. No ifs. No buts. Moorside is a fantastic opportunity and I will make sure our community gets what it deserves.

But to ensure that Cumbria gets what it needs, we need to make sure that the Government properly invests in West Cumbria. We need to invest in our roads and rail, plus better broadband and phone signal. Most importantly of all, we need to invest in the NHS, not cut it to the bone, as the Tories currently plan to.

As a former hospital doctor I have been part of the campaign against the proposed cuts to West Cumberland Hospital’s A&E, children’s ward and the maternity wing, as well as the cutting of beds in Keswick Hospital.

I have made the 40 mile journey to Carlisle as a blue-light ambulance driver. I know how long that journey can take. I know how dangerous it is forcing expectant mothers to travel for over an hour from West Cumberland to Carlisle hospital.

The Tories want to cut the NHS and aren’t investing in the community. Only a vote for Labour will send a message that it’s unacceptable. This campaign is a choice between allowing the Tories to strip NHS services away from Copeland or sending them a message that it’s unacceptable.

Cumbria has received less investment cash than any other area in the country in today’s Government announcement. I am disappointed to see that the Government has decided to put Cumbria at the back of the queue. I care about Cumbria and I want it to get the investment it deserves. Whilst I welcome the additional money for Cumbria, the reality is that this falls well short of the investment we need.

Clive Lewis MP, Labour's Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, commenting on the pensions dispute at Sellafield, said:

“It is completely unacceptable that this Tory government is raiding the retirement incomes of thousands of Sellafield workers for the second time. These workers have already been forced on to far less generous schemes, and now the Government is coming after them again. The grounds for doing so are completely bogus – the pension fund is in full financial health and does not fall under public sector pension reform.

“This is a cynical attempt by the Government to save money by picking the pockets of British workers, and we are completely behind their fight for fairness. The government should stop these cuts immediately, and return to talks.

"For all her warm words on standing up for ordinary people, Theresa May's Tories are leaving workers worse off.”

In response Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, Jonathan Ashworth MP, said:

“Today's figures reveal the pressure and strain A&E departments are under across the country. People will be shocked that the A&E target has been missed for twenty three months in a row. North Cumbria University Hospital NHS trust missed the target by nearly 10% this month with figures showing only 85.8% of people were seen within four hours. It's simply not good enough.

“At a time like this, the Government should be taking action to ensure the NHS is given extra resources to deal with the challenges it is facing and to support the dedicated hard working NHS staff holding it all together.

“Instead, the Tories are putting the future of West Cumberland Hospital under threat with proposals that could result in the A&E being axed, the children’s ward closing and Doctors being removed from the maternity unit.

“Labour is calling on the Government to ensure that the NHS has proper funding here in West Cumbria and across the country, to guarantee that key waiting targets are protected and to abandon any attempts to downgrade the A&E target.”
